About us

Quartet

Strax Bravura is a saxophone quartet that has been playing concerts throughout Switzerland and other countries in Europe since 2010. These four young musicians bring their own style to the quartet, which makes it possible to enjoy no matter what mood you are in. The quartet is classically trained to play master repertoire pieces, but also ventures out to play works of other styles. It is the goal of the quartet to bring the fascination of classical saxophone to a wide audience, and this is made possible by giving various concerts for various occasions. In July of 2015, the quartet was recognized and rewarded by the Marianne and Curt Dienemann Foundation for its outstanding chamber music performance.

Saxophonistin

Silvia Mazzolini

Silvia Mazzolini started taking saxophone lessons at the music school in Spreitenbach (CH) from Beat Blaser and Matthias Kaiser. From 2006-2010, she was a student of Ueli Angstmann while attending the Kantonsschule of Wettingen (CH). In 2008, she was chosen to be in the top level support program of Canton Aargau, where she participated in workshops lead by Fabio di Casola, Julia Schröder, and Werner Bärtschi. Starting in 2010, she studied classical saxophone under Jean-Georges Korper at the Zurich University of the Arts, where she then received a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2013, graduating with honors. She decided to continue her studies at the Zurich Univeristy of the Arts under Lars Mlekusch, pursuing a Master of Arts in Pedagogy and a Master in Music Education, and graduated in 2016 with honors.

Silvia performs as a soloist while playing in symphony orchestras, big bands, and various chamber music groups such as the saxophone quartet Strax Bravura, while also being a part of the Bläsersolisten Aargau.  She is an active music teacher at several different music schools including the music school in Dietikon, while also teaching saxophone registers to various wind ensembles such as the National Jugenblasorchester (Njbo) and giving various music workshops. In her spare time, she has a passion for traveling and enjoys playing various sports.

Saxophonistin

Valeriya Bernikova

Valeriya Bernikova was born into a musical family in Poltava, Ukraine. Starting at a young age, she won several competitions and played solos regularly, while also participating in orchestras and big bands. She completed her music degree at a local college, majoring in saxophone and minoring in conducting. During this time, she also studied German and Literature at the Kharkov Karazin University and graduated in 2012 with honors. In 2008, she was accepted into the saxophone class of Jean-Georges Koerper at the Zurich University of the Arts to pursue a master’s degree. In December of 2013, she completed her master’s, graduated with honors, and received the highest score possible for her master’s recital titled Her Majesty, Sonata (American sonatas originally for saxophones in the xx century).  During this recital, a trio sonata piece composed by Edvard Moritz featuring the saxophone alto, violin, and piano made its debut in Switzerland. In recent years, Valeriya has played in competitions throughout France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, while also partaking in master’s classes in Boswil (CH), Marktoberdorf (D), Amsterdam (NL), Gap (F), as well as other cities. Additionally, she enjoys playing in a variety of chamber music ensembles, including the Strax Bravura saxophone quartet. In May of 2015, she made her debut as a soloist at the Tonhalle Zurich with the Orchestra for Peace.

Finally, in the Summer of 2016, she competed a second master’s degree, conducting for wind orchestras, at the University of Arts in Bern, and graduated with honors. She is now the conductor of the Swiss Wind Orchestras Bassersdorf and Seuzach, and for other various brass band formations.

Saxophonist

Florian Haupt

Florian Haupt was only ten years old when he performed playing saxophone for the first time. His first audience was a poster of John Coltrane, which was hung up on his childhood bedroom wall. He made his first public solo appearances at Freudenberg High School, participating as a saxophonist in jazz bands and as a member of the school orchestra. He was interested in the width of the saxophone repertoire, when his former high school saxophone teacher, Ueli Angstmann, introduced him to the baritone saxophone. Although his saxophone quartet Nonsequence was reaching a wide audience since in 2005, his teacher from pre-university, Urs Schoch, reminded this young Swiss saxophonist the way to become a successful saxophonist to never skip over the concentrated studies of scales and etudes passes. His bachelor professor, Jean-Georges Koerper supported him in his ideas, which helped him grow immensely in his music throughout the bachelor program. Sascha Armbruster and Beat Hofstetter developed the baritone saxophonist from Strax Bravura into a musician and educator, who starting teaching at the music school in Zollikon in summer of 2013. A year later, he completed his Master of Arts in Music and Pedagogy at the University of Luzern. He continued to exericise scales and etudes over the next two years, and through his dedication he reached a new level of professionalism in his playing. In June of 2016, he received a second Master of Arts degree in Music Performance.

The inquisitive saxophonist is always looking for new ways and places, and interacts with composers, musicians, and artists. The openness and curiosity he has are the tools that help him set and reach his saxophone and musical goals.
